The Hunsrück-Hochwald National Park extends over the high areas of the Hunsrück between the Moselle and Rhine. Primeval forests and an abundance of plants and animals characterize the area. Here, nature is allowed to be as it should – a pure idyll of peace and quiet. In contrast to the well-known wine-growing areas along the Moselle and the Rhine, the national park is relatively unknown. In this Collection, the national park takes center stage as you ride through its heart.
You will also two of the region’s more exhilarating highlights which offer more biking action: the Trailpark Erbeskopf and Flowtrail Stromberg. Complete with picturesque camping spots to spend the night, this Collection offers a varied, nature-filled, and action-packed adventure that is perfect for a (long) weekend.
Your adventure begins at Sankt Wendel, a mountain bike hotspot known for its first-class bike races held year after year. From here, you’ll head straight for the national park and its highest point, the Erbeskopf. Here, you’ll find the trail park of the same name. Next, continue in a north-easterly direction, stopping by Flowtrail Stromberg, before arriving in the beautiful town of Bingen am Rhein.
I’ve planned this route so you can complete it in two to four days, depending on how long you spend in the saddle each day and how long you ride at the trail parks. If you follow the stages as suggested here, you’ll end each day at two wonderful campsites that are perfect for a bikepacking adventure. The second stage is slightly shorter, giving you time to begin the day with a few downhill runs at Trailpark Erbeskopf. Or, if you prefer, you can relax and use the time to enjoy the beautiful nature and cultural highlights in the area. You are, after all, riding in the footsteps of Romans who once traveled here from Bingen to Trier. Hunsrück is a good place to stop for a bite to eat to try the delicious regional dishes such as dumplings and game.
Bingen and Sankt Wendel are easy to reach by train so you can travel to and from your adventure without using a car. So get ready for a relaxed weekend on your bike that is brimming with nature and action.
