The Watzmann, landmark and mountain of destiny at the same time, rises ruggedly and mightily next to the picturesque Königssee. Its shape has already earned it the title of the most beautiful mountain in the world. The challenging Watzmann traverse is a goal of many aspiring mountaineers and its notorious east face is the highest rock face in the eastern Alps.
However, it’s not only the mountain that’s worth exploring. On this hut-to-hut circuit around the Watzmann, you'll discover the majestic Wimbachtal valley, the barren Steinernes Meer plateau and the picturesque Königssee lake. Of course, a climb of the Watzmann is not to be missed. After spending the night in the Watzmannhaus, you climb the Watzmann-Hocheck with its magnificent views.
As well as the much-loved sights, you also discover lesser known places in the Steinernes Meer and its karst lake: Funtensee. Here, you can enjoy the tranquillity of nature and switch off. The crowning glory at the end of the journey is the boat trip across the Königssee back to the starting point.
In four days you explore some of the most beautiful corners of the Berchtesgaden National Park. At times, the route leads over challenging mountain paths and terrain. Sturdy shoes, surefootedness and alpine trekking experience are therefore necessary. The first two stages in particular are very demanding in terms of fitness. You spend the nights in cosy huts, which provide delicious regional food. Book your sleeping place early and always pack enough water and food for the journey. You can fill up on both at the huts.
The best time of year for your Watzmann adventure is from mid-June to the end of September. Check beforehand whether the huts are open and what the conditions of the trails are like. Keep an eye on the weather forecast before setting off and ask the hut keepers for advice along the way. You should always take suitable rain gear, warm clothing and sun protection with you.
You can easily reach the start point of the circuit by bus and train, for example from Munich or Salzburg. If you’re travelling by car, you’ll find a large car park at Königssee, though there’ll be a fee.
I wish you lots of fun. Enjoy the magnificent natural sights and collect unforgettable memories.
